Who can be targeted by a digital scam?
Anyone can be targeted; most people have a mobile phone, an email account, social media accounts, and various other online accounts. This means many people across all ages will have been targeted at some point, and digital scams are increasingly common as more and more of our activities and transactions go online. To avoid falling victim to these scams, it’s a good idea to learn how to spot them and stay safe online.
However, international students may be especially vulnerable to scammers because you are living and studying outside your home country, in new surroundings, in a new culture, and you may not have as much experience of the social norms and etiquette of your new host country. Scammers know this and take advantage of international students finding their feet in a new country.
Always be suspicious of unsolicited emails and communications which claim to be from official bodies (UK Home Office, the embassy, their bank, or police) that you have not been expecting and ask you to confirm your personal data.
