Accessing your account
How do I access my King's email account for the first time?
Students at King's can access their King's email account using a web browser from anywhere with an internet connection.
Before you access your email for the first time, you should register for online services and set your own password if you haven't already done so.
You can use the Microsoft Outlook Web App to access your email. Your username for your King’s email account is your K-Number (e.g k1234567@kcl.ac.uk).
You will also need to register your account to make sure that it can be protected with Multi Factor Authentication (MFA). This will also mean that you can quickly and easily reset your password at any time without having to contact the IT Service Desk.
How do I use my account?
Your King's email address will be used by staff and services across the university to communicate important information to you, so make sure you check your account regularly.
To keep up-to-date with your King's email account, you may find it helpful to add the account to your smartphone so important emails can reach you quickly.
We require you to reset your password every 365 days.
What happens if I don't use my account?
Inactive accounts are a security risk. You must access your account at least every 90 days by accessing any Microsoft service (such as Microsoft Office) or any King's IT application.
Accounts not used for 90 days will receive a reminder and will be disabled 7 days later if they remain unused. To reactivate a disabled account, you will need to contact the IT Service Desk.
Further support with accessing your account
I'm unable to log in to my IT account using my username and password
When registering for online services, enter your username in the format k-number + @kcl.ac.uk. For example, if your King's username is k1234567, then enter k1234567@kcl.ac.uk in the "User Name" box.
If you are still having problems, please email the IT Service Desk.
I forgot my password to access my IT account, what should I do?
If you have set up Microsoft Self-Service Password reset, then you can visit the Microsoft Online Password Reset webpage to request a password change.
To request a password change:
- Enter your username in the format k1234567@kcl.ac.uk.
- You will then receive a verification code to an external (i.e. non-King's) email address that you confirmed when setting up self-service.
If you have any issues with resetting your password, please attach proof of photo ID to an email and send it to 88888@kcl.ac.uk from a personal email address. The IT Service desk will then be able to reset your password for you.
To find out more about password management, please visit our password resets and management page.
