Making an ATAS application

New students

• The subject you’ll be studying is your full course title as it appears on your offer letter.
• Your course start date appears on your offer letter.
• Your CAH3 code appears on your offer letter.

Current students

• Your full course title appears in your student record. Please note that this is not the proposed title of your research project.
• You should enter the day after you’re making your ATAS application as your course start date.
• If you’re unsure what your CAH3 code is, please contact your academic department. Please make sure you enter the correct code or you’ll have to reapply for ATAS.

The qualification you’ll be studying should be your final qualification. For example, if your offer letter says you’ll be studying an MPhil /PhD, you should select PhD.

MRes students
Please enter the nature and scope of your main research project and list any core modules you’ll be taking.

Other Master’s degree students
Please enter the titles of all core modules and all the optional modules you may choose to study.

PhD students
Please enter the full research statement which has been approved by your academic department/supervisor.

Important to know: Please do not amend or add to this text without checking with your department.

• Your gender should match the information on your passport.
• Your passport number should be the one you’ll be using for your visa application.
• If you have dual nationality, you should enter as your first nationality the one you’ll be using for your visa application.

• Please make sure you provide an email address and telephone number you check regularly, as the ATAS team will use it to contact you if they need any more information.
• Your ATAS certificate will also be sent to the email address that you enter here.

• Please declare all your studies in this section, including any courses you’re currently studying and even those which aren’t connected to your proposed research and/or were undertaken outside the UK.
• If you’ve not completed a course yet, please enter the expected end date.
• You’re not required to provide information about your high school education - only university level and above.

Please provide details of any academic or professional papers you’ve published, including any for which you were one of the co-authors or contributors. This also includes publications not published in English.

Please declare all employment undertaken in the UK and other countries, including internships, work placements and unpaid work.

• You must have known your referees for at least 3 years.
• You can’t use family members or friends as referees.
• At least one of your referees should be from the academic sector.
• A referee from your home country is preferable. However, if you’ve mainly studied in another country, you may use a referee from this country as long as you’ve known them for at least 3 years. You must also declare on your application the reason you can't provide a referee from your home country.
• If you have work experience, you should include a referee from your employment.

Important to know: this is referring to your financial sponsor (if you have one) and not your visa sponsor.

• If you’re self-funded or a family member is funding you, please enter your own/their details in this section.
• If you’ve applied for funding but you’re waiting for a decision, you should enter the sponsor’s details and explain that the funding decision is pending.
• If you’re receiving funding from King’s and you’re unsure which contact details to enter, please use your academic department’s main address.
• Examples of conditions of your offer include that you’re required to return to your home country after completing your research or you must provide regular reports about your progress.

• Your ATAS account will have the status ‘submitted’ while your application is being considered.
• This status will change to ‘decided’ once a decision has been made.
• It can take a minimum of 6 weeks for the ATAS team to decide on an application.
• If any of the following change after you’ve submitted your application, you can notify the ATAS team without making a new application:
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Marital status
  • Passport details
• For any other changes, you must withdraw your application and submit a new one.
